From Online Business Idea to Active Website – What You Need to Know Now!

Just in! The US economy is officially in recession, according to every major news source yesterday. I’d venture to say that was probably not news to you. We’ve already started to see and feel the ramifications of a troubled and slowing economy, but the worst of it is that experts say this will likely be an extended recession, longer than others we’ve experienced in the past. Thousands of jobs will be lost and companies that were once thought beacons of stability and growth will fail (e.g., Lehman Brothers, Citigroup and General Motors, more?). Let’s hope the experts are wrong.

So what should you do? Are you at risk? Anyone in your family? Maybe it’s time to finally get off that  roller coaster that “corporate” employment has become and start building a better lifestyle for you and your loved ones now with home based work.

Maybe you have a few online business ideas floating around your head for a potential homebased business, and you really haven’t done much about it. Well, it’s time to get serious now! I mean it. Now. No kidding. Now!

Why now?

Because you’re losing precious time. You see, what most internet experts won’t tell you is a dirty little secret practiced by the search engines.

Ageism. That’s right “Ageism.” In this case what it means is that older sites get preference to newer sites by the search engines, especially Google. No one really knows why, just that it happens. Many speculate that it’s because of the number of spammy sites that are created and discarded. So it’s logical that a search engine might consider a site that has been around for a while a legitimate website.

If you don’t believe me, go ahead and try it out for yourself. Go to Google and do a search for whatever you want. Record the domain names that make up the first page listings. Then go to the WayBack Machine and check how old the website is. Just type the domain name, click “Take Me Back,” and then, voila, it shows you just how long the site has been around and how it’s changed over the years. Nine times out of ten, you’ll find sites that are at least a few years old on page 1 of Google, and virtually none that are brand new.

But don’t fret! There are ways that you can improve your chances of getting on the first page even if you are a new website, but that’s for another blog post ;-) The message here is that the age of your website is important to your search engine rankings so if you have an online business idea or two, it’s best to register your domain names and sign up with a host now. Precious time is a-wasting!

But wait, won’t that be expensive…Especially if you have a couple sites you’re thinking about – multiple domain names, multiple sites, hosting fees and website design? Yikes!!!

Well, that’s where the good news comes in. Hosting has become very, very competitive so much so that you can have multiple sites on a single hosting plan that will cost you less than $10/month. And there’s good news about websites and website design. The search engines absolutely love blogs and a website owner does not need to know a stitch of programming code or HTML to update their website. One of the most popular blog platforms is WordPress, which is available free to website owners. Because the WordPress software is open-source, there are thousands of templates and add-ons (called plugins) most of which are free or nearly free that add interest and functionality to your site.

See my money saving tip that will help you get the best deals on hosting services and domain names. The recommended hosting services each have WordPress blogs available for installation. And, for a limited time, I’ll even set up your WordPress blog for you. Find out why!

Any questions about your website(s), online business ideas, hosting plans, and more, just leave a comment, and I’ll be sure to get back to you!. I read all comments and answer all questions.

  2. Susan I don’t think most people realise that home based work or starting an online business is an option for them. Looks like youv’e created a useful site that helps to get the word out. I read the other day that most corporate jobs last 3.4 years… i had no idea.If people see jobs as “safe” then they need to think about that stat. Starting a work at home career can be done without quitting a job too, talk about limiting risk!

    Great site.
