If you would like your child to learn music, the guitar is a great instrument to consider. Not so long ago the guitar was somewhat of an unknown instrument, and as you would expect there were correspondingly much less instructors than there are today available. A good many guitarists today are self taught and have become good guitarists on their own. Other guitarists have learned from instructors, and many of them have learned well also. The guitar is a versitle instrument and can be played solo or as an accompaniment to other instruments like the ocarina. In more recent times there is even the option for an online guitar lesson, and this option has become popular. Which option is better for you is dependent on a number of factors including proximity to a good guitar teacher, your personal learning style, your budget, and how much self-discipline you would have in learning an instrument on your own. Here are some points for you to consider:

1. You most likely want a few other things to learn to play the guitar. You most likely want a medium sized guitar pick, lots of patience, and an armless chair to sit in. You should probably take it slow at first until you are familiar with the basic techniques, the mechanics, the basics, and the terminology of the guitar.

2. Online there are websites that offer various types of self-learning programs. You can easily apply for them, and the learning set would be sent to your home. This set would most of the times comprise of the basics and some advance tips for those who already know how to play the guitar and want to improve. Various CDs and DVDs, which also come with guitar sheet music and tablature, would guide them right from the first step until the last lesson, which includes self-testing and so on.

3. How well a person progresses in his guitar skills pivots solely on their desire, self-discipline, and passion to practice. Guitar lessons can only be as good as the student and their commitment, passion, and desire to learn how to play. The speed of learning will depend on your personal learning style, proximity to a good guitar teacher, your budget, and how much self-discipline you would have in learning an instrument on your own.

4. You will need to purchase a guitar if you are serious about learning the guitar. Many good guitars can be found at second hand shops, pawn stores, or your local instrument shop. Online you will also be able to find many good used guitars as well. For the beginner, you will most likely be best off starting with a basic six string guitar.

5. How well a person plays will generally depend on how well they want to play and how much perspiration they are willing to put into playing. Keep in mind that sheet music, recorded music, and chord books are all helpful to the budding guitar player, but having an objective listener to tell them what can be improved with their playing can help greatly.
